Every spring the Highland Games come to Dunedin, Florida, sister city to Stirling, Scotland, a city northwest of Edinburgh on the River Forth. My wife is of Scottish heritage, as evidenced by her grandfather's birthplace in Northern Ireland and her family's belonging to the Presbyterian Church. To my advantage as I attended the Games today as family, listening to pipe bands from as far as Long Island (The Rosin Dubh Irish Pipe Band) and as near as the Dunedin Middle School Pipe Band. While enjoying the haggis (sheep's heart, liver, lungs, and stomach) and chips with a stout to wash it down. Listen to the pipe bands warm up and compete in front of the judges. And celebrate tradition with me.

Our veterans may be the only ones who have had the experience. Though after the recent hurricanes here on Clearwater Beach the National Guard visited our neighborhood and handed out MREs. George Washington was born in Virginia on February 11, 1731, according to the then-used Julian calendar. In 1752, however, Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar which moved Washington's birthday a year and 11 days to February 22, 1732.
